Promoting climate change mitigation through smart agricultural practices

Ghana - 05 September, 2022

Ghana’s transition zone is gradually losing its tree cover. This has largely been attributed to deforestation and expansion of agricultural lands. The development has exposed smallholder farmers to the harsh climate conditions which threaten their livelihoods.

To reverse this trend, farmers and some agricultural extension officers have benefitted from training on climate adaptation through Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR).

“Until we innovate, we will continue to be at the mercy of climate change. Humanity will be gone if we don’t speed up tree planting as a remedy to climate crisis,” LEAN Project Manager and facilitator for the training, Daniel Kofi Abu said.

He added that “the global fertilizer crisis is enough reason to consider climate smart agriculture practices. Our food systems and production are changing and the only solution is to be climate smart”. The capacity building field training was undertaken by Tropenbos Ghana, through the European Union-funded LEAN project in the transition zone.

The smallholder farmers who benefitted from the training were from Nkoranza South Municipality, Nkoranza North, and the Techiman North Districts. The training was attended by farmers from various crop categories such as cereal, vegetables, tree crops, legumes, and tubers.
