Stakeholders in Western North Region undergo training in climate-smart agriculture

Ghana - 23 August, 2021

Key stakeholders in natural resources and agriculture in the Western North Region have undergone a three-day training in climate-resilient actions. The training was organized by Tropenbos Ghana under its Mobilizing More for Climate (MoMo4C) Programme. Representatives from Community Resources Management Area (CREMA), Hotspot Management Board (HMB), youth in cocoa, women in cocoa, and individual farmers in Sefwi Wiawso municipal, Juabeso, and Bia West districts benefited from the training.

The training which focused on climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices was led by Mr. Eric Mensah, an expert in CSA. After a brief presentation, he led participants through a discussion session. To make the training more participatory, participants were also called upon to share their knowledge on climate change and climate-smart techniques they practice. Since the Sefwi Wiawso, Juabeso and Bia West area is predominantly a cocoa growing zone, most of the climate-smart practices discussed focused on cocoa production.

Climate-smart practices discussed during the training included the use of hybrid varieties or improved planting materials/cultivars, sustainable land clearing methods, no burning of biomass, cocoa-agroforestry, use of organic fertilizer, rainwater harvesting, fire management, and income diversification. The CSA training is one of Mobilizing More for Climate (MoMo4C) strategies to reduce vulnerability, enhance resilience and the adaptive capacity of stakeholders in the Western North Region.
